Community Service Project
Middle School Religion / Values Dept.
Suppose you love to read but you don’t have a library in your community and have no extra money to purchase reading material or books. What would you do? Re-read your school books?

This is a problem facing many Thai students. The Toyota Dealerships recognizes this problem and started a book drive with each dealership setting up depositories for book donations and placing articles in the local newspapers asking for donations of books and Magazines. As the Religion and Values departments are always looking for new ways to help others and literacy is close the hearts of those of us at RIS, this book drive looked like the perfect fit for a community service project for Middle School students.

Within days the books started coming into Mr. Larry, Mr. Ross and Mrs. Nora’s classrooms. The students brought in books for all reading levels, from comic books, and magazines to cookbooks. There were books in Thai, English and even Chinese. Mrs. Nora’s room started to look like a used book store before the books were picked up by Mr. Carl Oppenborn, Vice President of Toyota Thonburi, and a few other men from his office.
Finally, the day came for the pick-up as you can see from the pictures of the participating sixth grade classes with some of the boxes of books being handed over for delivery to upcountry students. It is the hope that the books brought in by our students will provide other students, less fortunate than ourselves, with the opportunity to enjoy reading as we do. |
