A Message from Campus Ministry
Is Music in the air these days? I hope so. Most of us sing songs, on-key, off-key, at least occasionally. Right ? Our RIS choirs entertain and inspire us at Assemblies. The Jeremiahs have cut CDs and we proudly listen. Joy comes with music. So, it was very amusing to me to read what an educator in an International School proposed. He wrote that Music, Art and Drama should be the Core Subjects for schools, with Math, Social Studies, etc. to be just "electives" !! The author claimed that song, art and drama bring out the emotion, deep feeling, and develop the soul, all very important to help youngsters and teenagers grow to be a full persons, happy to be alive. What do you think about that !!?? Whether his idea was on-beat or off-beat is debatable. But, most of us would agree that music and song usually revive our drooping spirits.
Christmas is a time for music and song. It always has been, at least in my life-time. Whether it was Bing Crosby's "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" or "Angels We Have Heard on High" - we rejoiced ! Even "Jingle Bells" and the tinkling bell of a Supermarket Santa Claus, all began in some way with the celebration of Christmas - the celebration of the Birth of Christ ! We sing and rejoice again this year while celebrating Christ's Birth in Bethlehem. Scriptures indicate that Christmas was announced by song. We read: "suddenly there was with the angel (who announced the Good News to the shepherds) a multitude of heavenly hosts, praising God and saying, ' Glory to God in the high heaven, peace on earth to those on whom His favor rests".
With Christmas arriving very soon now, we bolster up our spirits. Let us sing !!! Or at least, let us appreciate listening to the melodies of Christmas, rejoicing with peace in our heart ! If I had a beautiful Baritone voice or these pages could produce music for you, I would love to have you listen to a love song of Christ "Peace be with you, My Peace I give to you". God's blessings on each of you for a Very Merry Christmas. Father Leo Travis,C.Ss.R.
